A couple days ago my office held a charity bake sale. I love bake sales because it gives me a chance to go crazy and bake something fun while at the same time give it all away. Plus, for very obvious reasons they are one of my favourite work events. It brings everyone in the building together and it creates a sense of community while raising money for a great cause.

However, I’ve been known to get a little carried away when baking for others, so in order to have fun and maintain my sanity, there are a few things I have to keep in mind when baking something for work:

A long time ago, I purchased a beautiful container of matcha green tea powder with the intention of baking all kinds of delicious matcha flavoured goodies

I made a few things, but then the container was pushed to the back of my cupboard. As I continued to bake things for the blog, I would reach into the cupboard for a bag of flour or baking powder, take notice the little container of matcha powder and would mentally remind myself to use it for my next recipe.

I’m embarrassed to say that this went on for a little while.

Matcha (green tea) powder is delicious in baking. You heard it here first, folks! 🙂

Matcha powder is especially delicious when paired up with the delicate art of shortbread. Savoury, buttery and oh-so-sinful. I just love the way it melts into goodness on my tongue and crumbles away in my hands when I eat it.

Show of hands, I can’t be the only one, right? That must be why those large tins of chocolate shortbread at Costco are so darn popular, especially around the holiday season.

EDIT: Hundreds of bakers, dozens of volunteers, thousands of baked goodies, over the course of two days and six locations and word on the street is that we have surpassed our $10,000 goal. Thank you Toronto for opening your wallets and hearts to us in the name of helping people in Japan. In the next few days, there will be a more defined amount of money, but I am so proud to have been a part of this amazing event!

Here is the second item I have made for Toronto Bakes for Japan. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be at the Amaranto Cafe to help sell these and many other goodies with the other volunteers.

Although these aren’t really deemed “healthy” with all the butter and icing, I decided to go with whole wheat flour again to offset all of the sugar. You are still welcome to use regular all-purpose or cake flour if that is what you prefer.

The green tea powder was purchased at Ten Ren, an excellent tea shop in the GTA.
