]]>For the last week, we’ve been cat-sitting for one of Trevor’s co-workers while she’s out of the country. Besides slowly morphing into cat people, we’ve also become aware of all the loud and not-so-loud noises in our condo. People passing by in the hallway, the TV when we watch our favourite shows, and recently, the ice cream maker. These are not sounds we would notice on a day to day basis, but now that we have a cat around, every little creak is like space shuttle launch in the living room.
Luckily our new feline friend has been warming up to us and his new surroundings. By the time I pulled out the ice cream maker yesterday, he was already chilling with Trevor on the couch and didn’t bat an eye when I turned it on. This was a far-cry from our first night together when he would run every time he saw one of us and then spent the night in the bathtub. Now when we come home from work, he’ll be at the entrance to greet us and has claimed his own spot on our bed. Trevor and I will definitely be going through a transition period when he goes home to his owner in a few days.

]]>I never thought I would be the type of person who makes her own ice cream. This idea changed when I was diagnosed as lactose-intolerant as a child and later even more so when Trevor and I started dating.
Back when I was diagnosed, there wasn’t a lot of dairy-free food options like there are now. So for a good number of years, I relied on taking those funny tasting Lactaid pills so I wouldn’t have to give up my love of cheese, chocolate and most importantly ice cream. Social events like birthday parties were always a little weird and I soon became known as that kid who had to pop pills in order to eat a slice of pizza or birthday cake.
Years later I was in university, I was on a strict budget and as I slowly stopped taking (or forgetting to buy) the pills, I found that I was able to tolerate eating dairy in small to medium doses. Today I no longer have to take the pills, but since I started dating Trevor, I also don’t purchase as many dairy products since I’m usually stuck eating it myself. When I do buy ice cream or pizza, I tend to feel a little guilty when I eat it in front of him. Food isn’t really that fun unless you get to share.

]]>Welcome to the new layout for She Bakes Here!
For the last couple of months, I’ve been working with the brilliant and talented Lindsay over at Purr Design to help make the scary leap from Blogger to a self-hosted WordPress site. Not only did she transfer every single file and comment, she also helped streamline my recipe index and made my recipes much more printer and user friendly. You can even like, tweet and pin each post! After being stuck with the limitations of Blogger for the last 2 1/2 years, I’m pretty much leaping with joy over the amount of freedom I now have. The popular post listing on the side bar? All Lindsay. The fact that my tweets show up again on the blog? All Lindsay again! (PS: I plan on tweeting more, I promise!)
So have a look around and let me know what to think of the new look. I’m still in the process of formatting each and every of my almost 200 posts, but if anything doesn’t work, feel free to pop me an email or comment.
In the meantime, I have a special recipe to share. Special for you because its delicious and you don’t have to turn on your oven to make it, special for me because it’s part of a fun memory I have with one of my closest friends.

]]>I’m interrupting the usual flour and sugar-fueled madness that goes on around here to talk about one of my favourite green smoothie recipes. I was almost hesitate to call it a recipe since I really don’t have a set way of making this drink. Every time I make it it’s a little different since I never measure and tend to just eyeball the ingredients when I’m throwing them into the blender. However, once you find your favourite way of making something, it’s hard not to want to share it with the world.
(Are you still here? Good, I was worried that once you saw the first picture and read the words green smoothie everyone would just stand up and leave. Trust me on this, it’s delicious, refreshing and jam-packed with plenty of vitamins and nutrients. I understand that vitamins and nutrients are not words I use too often here on She Bakes Here, but I thought I would make an exception this time around.)

]]>A couple days ago, I decided to take advantage of Trevor’s work benefits and went for a massage. This was my first time going to a registered massage therapist and the only way I could describe the experience was pure…..bliss….. Why we’ve never used this part of his benefits is beyond me and now I’m going to find a way to incorporate this regularly.
Originally I went because I was having issues with my lower back, but the most alarming thing was having her discover how much tension exists in my neck. I was also told that there was more tension in the left side of my body than my right, which makes sense because I have a tendency to lean to one side in my office chair which is a big no-no.

]]>January is the month that I always find that I eat the healthiest. I stock up on portable fresh fruit and vegetables to take to work and I avoid junk food like the plague. I feel really good for about three-ish weeks and then as February starts to inch closer, I slowly fall off the wagon.
But like every year that I can remember doing this, I am thinking not this year. This year is a big wedding year, and with being a bridesmaid in one of my best friend’s wedding in July and our wedding in August, I figure that this alone is enough motivation to keep on eating better.
This is one of the challenges I’ve faced since starting a food blog – trying to eat healthier. Since I bake something new at least once a week, its almost a guarantee that there will always be baked goods in our kitchen. That’s not a lot of willpower for someone who wants to keep fitting into both a bridesmaid dress and her wedding dress in less than 8 months.

]]>I can’t believe it’s been over 3 weeks since I last blogged. Bad Jessica, bad, bad Jessica.
Sometimes you just need to get away though, and what better way is there than to surround yourself with family and food? The joke in our family is that no matter what kind of get-together we plan, there is always tons of food involved. My brother Nathan and I joke that we always gain weight when we go home to visit, but that’s what happens when you have a family that loves food. My Grandma cooked in a restaurant for over 20 years and my mom loves to have people over and feed them. No one leaves our home hungry.

]]>June was a really busy month for me. Between working my usual Monday-Friday day job, I decided to get back into shape by joining a nearby hot yoga studio. Taking up hot yoga in a city like Toronto can be really expensive, but they were having an amazing promotion of 30 days for $30 and based on the location of the studio and the schedule of their classes, I knew I couldn’t turn it down. Since I had full unlimited access to any class, I decided to make the most of it and attend as many as I could.
Physically, I really benefited from the class. My clothes are a bit looser, my appetite has changed and I’m dealing with the Toronto humidity much better than I was last year. I’ve upped my water consumption and I can touch my toes again without having to bend my knees.

]]>Of course, once the heat wave was here, it left almost immediately. Ever since Friday, we’ve had nothing but cloudy skies with cold blasts of wind and rain. Oh, there will be the odd moment the sun will peak out of the clouds, but now it’s like someone turned the dial back on summer and now we’re experiencing the spring weather we missed for most of May.
Um….yay!
